A pharmaceutical company, Bayer AG, is suing the French pharmaceutical company Pfizer and its European rival Merck for erectile dysfunction, after it claimed that it invented and patented a Viagra prescription drug called.
In an exclusive victory for Pfizer and Merck, the pharmaceutical giant said on Monday that it had invented a generic version of the drug to treat erectile dysfunction, which had been linked to more than 10,000 deaths.
The lawsuit is designed to challenge the company's patent on the drug, which was first sold in the United States in 1994, after its patents on it expired. It also seeks to compensate the company's sales force for the deaths and health problems caused by the drug.
In a statement, the company said it had invented a generic version of the drug, which would provide a cheaper alternative to Pfizer's Viagra. But the Viagra drug had been linked to more than one million deaths and other health problems, including strokes, heart attacks and kidney disease.
